Art Is...You - The East Coast Art Retreat

Judy Gula

We joke about the "family collector gene", and I had thought my grandfather started the "disease" running through our blood! But no, it goes back much further than that, as I recently learned that my great great grandfather owned a junk shop! And I inherited the gene and am a collector too - I enjoy hunting and gathering unique finds which the casual observer would think has outlived its usefullness. However, I envision the next life for this stuff, which is one of the reasons for this website.

Next, there is the fiber person. I have been involved in fiber art since my aunt taught me to spin whileI was in elementary school. I fondly remember that wonderful first science fair project on natural dyes, thenfor years mom shuttled me from art class to art class. After graduating college with majors in Fashion Design and Business Marketing, I have also learned to weave, sew, dye, stamp, quilt, bead - all the while the collector gene growing ever more active. All those experiences and contacts have bought me to fiber art and mixed media through art quilts and my fiber jewelry line, each showcased in the website. I have been a member of the Potomac Craftsmen Gallery, Inc. located in the Torpedo Art Factory, Alexandria, Virginia for over 10 years. My claim to fame includes when one of my charm bracelets was featured in a Washington Post Style section special for Mother's Day shopping, and more recently when my studio was visited by a tour of 40 members of the James Renwick Alliance, the exclusive support group of the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

And finally is the business part of life experiences. I have worked in a family business with my father and husband everyday for the past 15 years. Along with the pride of helping run the business, it has given me the opportunity to travel internationally, meet craftsmen in other countries, and establish contacts who can provide products to be offered here. One of my goals for this site is to bring those exciting items to you through my website.

I have wonderful supportive family and friends in my creative and business adventures, and I look forward to meeting and making new friends and business associates.
